Between the ages of three and six, children possess an extraordinary capacity to absorb all aspects of their environment. In a quest to understand and integrate into their culture, they seek purposeful, meaningful activity. The Primary Level—often referred to as the Preschool and Kindergarten years—provides a prepared environment rich in factual, beautiful, and self-correcting materials where children actively construct their own intelligence.
Our Primary Communities: Ginkgo, Bamboo, and Maple
Our Primary program is comprised of three distinct classrooms: Ginkgo, Bamboo, and Maple. Each of these vibrant classrooms is led by an experienced Montessori Guide and supported by a full-time classroom assistant at a minimum. To deeply respect and protect the sacred three-hour uninterrupted morning work cycle, additional support staff join these communities during peak morning hours, ensuring each child receives focused, individualized guidance.
The Prepared Environment & Academic Foundations
The Primary classroom introduces children to a larger, multi-age community where they learn the fundamental academic concepts that form the bedrock of later learning.
Rather than following a rigid, top-down curriculum based strictly on age, our Montessori Guides are trained to observe and respect your child’s unique potential. Lessons are presented individually or in small groups at the precise moment of your child’s developmental readiness. Through continuous, hands-on exploration of these materials, children naturally bridge the gap from concrete experiences to a deep, permanent understanding of abstract concepts.
Freedom of Choice and Self-Mastery
Within the structure of the classroom, children choose their own work and may work independently or in small groups. Deep, internalized learning happens through the organic repetition and ultimate mastery of these self-chosen activities. This freedom to make choices, balanced with community responsibility, is essential to developing the independence, confidence, and self-mastery for which Montessori students are known.
Community, Connection, and Outdoor Exploration
While the majority of the day is dedicated to indoor activity, our daily rhythm beautifully balances independence with community life and outdoor exploration. Our Guides regularly gather the children for group circles to share songs, movement, and engaging stories centered around cultural, scientific, or historical themes.
Extending beyond the classroom walls, each of our Primary communities features its own dedicated garden space. This outdoor prepared environment is available to the children throughout the day and across all seasons. Children may freely choose to take their work outside at any time—whether they are weeding, planting, observing seasonal changes, or sweeping the walkways.
Additionally, ample time is given each day for children to run, explore, and play with friends in our play park, supporting robust gross motor development and a joyful, lifelong connection to nature.
The Capstone Year: What Children Achieve
By the conclusion of the three-year Primary cycle—which culminates in the deeply impactful Kindergarten year—children at Corvallis Montessori School have built an incredible foundation. Our graduating Primary students typically demonstrate a remarkable level of academic and social competence:
- Language & Literacy: Writing in cursive with ease and reading phonetically, often composing and illustrating their own creative stories with drawings or watercolor paintings.
- Mathematical Mind: A concrete understanding of the four mathematical operations (addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division), a strong grasp of the decimal system, and an internalization of basic math facts.
- Cultural & Scientific Literacy: A joyful familiarity with geography, including the names of continents and countries, alongside botanical and zoological classifications of plants and animals.
